Supreme Court stays five out of six FIRs against actor Munmun Dutta for using a casteist slur “Bhangi”

 A vacation bench consisting of coram of two apex court judges Justice Hon’ble Mr. Justice Hemant Gupta and Hon’ble Mr. Justice V. Ramasubramanian accepted Mun Mun Dutta’s plea to club all FIRs registered against her in different states. The bench also stayed the next proceedings.

Various FIRs were lodged against the actress in the states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, New Delhi, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh in relation to her alleged slur remarks against SC (Scheduled Cast) communities.

Mun Mun Dutta features in TV Serial show ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashma’. Mun Mun in her Instagram Video post used the word “Bhangi” ,for which a total of six FIRs were lodged against Dutta in various states under section 3 (1) (U) of SC and ST (prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

After this incident Mun Mun Dutta also posted a clarification regarding her previous post stating “…it was never said with the intent of insult, intimidate, humiliate, or hurt anyone’s feeling…” and also said “once I was made aware of it meaning, I immediately took that part down. I have the utmost respect for every single person from every caste, creed or gender and acknowledge their immense contribution to our society or nation”.

The counsel appearing for Dutta before SC court with pleading for clubbing of all FIRs at different places with one at Hansi city in Hisar district of Haryana submitted that it was never her intent to hurt anyone’s sentiment.

The bench then decided to club all FIRs and stayed all proceedings other than Hansi city police station.
