A petition was filed whereby the FIR was lodged against the members of the Editors Guild of India (EGI) regarding a report of fact-finding about the ethnic violence in Manipur.
The SC said that it was just a report and not the commission of an offense.
The court said that it was contemplating whether the matter should be transferred to the Delhi HC or the Manipur HC
It was stated by Kapil Sibal on behalf of the EGI, that it was the army that had invited them to make the report as they wanted an objective assessment of on-the-ground reporting in Manipur and they even cited the letter of the army
To this, it was enquired by the CJI as to why the army invited the EGI in the first place, to which Kapil Sibal replied that it was done for the objective assessment.
At this point, it was said by the CJI that they will not make this a national political issue which can be derived from the intention.
He said that lastly, it is a report. And the point of contention is that they have done the report.
The court concluded the matter for the day and the next date of hearing is kept for Friday.
