Elections to the Lok Sabha: BJP wins first seat, Surat candidate wins without opposition
Last Updated on April 29, 2024 by News Desk
With its candidate from Gujarat’s Surat constituency winning unopposed, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured its first victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, marking a historic milestone. The withdrawal of other candidates and the rejection of the nominations of the main opposition congressional candidates made this triumph possible. Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, congratulated Mukeshbhai Dalal, the BJP candidate, on his election victory without opposition.
But there was a stir when Congress candidates Nilesh Kumbhani and Suresh Padsala’s applications were turned down because their proposers were accused of forging signatures. Due to this occurrence, the primary opposition party in the Surat election was almost eliminated. The Congress announced plans to take legal action, while the BJP welcomed its triumph and saw it as a major accomplishment.
Two questions that come to our mind would be:
What steps are being done to prevent such events in the future, and how will the rejection of congressional nominees owing to signature forgery affect the election process’s credibility?
Is the BJP’s resounding win in Surat an indication of the sincere support the party has received from voters, or does it raise questions about the impartiality and competitiveness of the electoral process?
