SC, In Case relating to Uphaar Fire Tragedy, Asks CBI To Respond To Theater Owners’ Plea For Property Return
Last Updated on April 20, 2023 by Administrator
The Supreme Court on Wednesday requested an oral statement from the Central Bureau of Investigation about the 1997 Uphaar fire Tragedy in response to an appeal petition filed by the proprietors of Ansal Theatres asking for custody of the theatre and its grounds.
The theatre owners filed the lawsuit in 2010, claiming that even after the victims received the proper compensation, they were never given back the theatre and its surroundings. Senior Counsel R. Bansant for the appellants contended that the theatre had been vacant for 26 years before a bench of Justices KM Joseph, BV Nagarathna, and Aravind Kumar.
The Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT) claims that the appeal’s main focus is on returning the theatre, which can pay some of the monies they believe they owe them. Judge Nagarathna questions what the conviction has to do with the return of the property to the owner.
The case was subsequently scheduled for another hearing on April 20 by the court. The plea was filed by Sanjay Jain, an attorney on record.
