Supreme court adjourns DMK leader Senthil Balaji’s plea for bail until the next hearing

Supreme court recently adjourned the hearing of a bail plea filed by DMK leader Senthil Balaji, Tamil Nadu minister, made on the medical grounds.
The SC bench comprising Justices Aniruddha Bose and Bela M Trivedi, was hearing the SLP challenging the Madras high court order which dismissed Balaji’s bail application made on medical grounds.
Balaji was arrested by the enforcement directorate (ED) concerning a cash-for-job money laundering case, on June 14. On the bail petition filed by Balaji on the grounds of medical condition, the Madras High Court rejected it contending that his health is not of that condition that could be dealt with only if he is released on bail. “The health report of the petitioner (Balaji) does not appear to be a medical condition which could be taken care of only if he is released on bail” the madras HC observed.
In the present hearing, an adjournment request was made both on behalf of the legislator’s counsel and the solicitor-general, the bench initially decided to defer the hearing for four weeks.
The junior lawyer protested, “It’s a bail matter. We are seeking bail on medical grounds. Can it be taken up on Monday?” To this, Justice Trivedi commented, “If it was such an urgent matter, the counsel should have been present.” Further, Justice Bose agreeing with Justice Trivedi said, “We’ll take it up Monday (November 06, 2023) next week.”
