Issue:

Approval of Funding for Technological Initiatives and Supreme Court Complex Expansion.

Facts of the Case:

The Union Government has approved an amount of Rs. 800 crores for the Supreme Court complex’s enlargement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated during the court’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has previously talked about the impending construction of a new, futuristic Supreme Court building. The decision was made in response to the challenges facing the present Supreme Court building.

In addition to launching various citizen-focused information and technology initiatives, the celebrations commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s founding. Among these projects are Digital Courts 2.0, the new Supreme Court website, and Digital Supreme Court Reports (Digi SCR).

Arguments Presented by Parties:

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of these measures and the Supreme Court’s responsibility in defending the values of justice, equality, and freedom. He emphasized the significance of technology improvements in guaranteeing every citizen’s ease of access to justice while also acknowledging the difficulties facing the justice delivery system. Additionally, PM Modi expressed pleasure with the judiciary’s dedication to improving the physical facilities of courts and praised their efforts to track the development of digitalization.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of universal access to justice and asked the Supreme Court to take a leading role in developing the capacity of all parties. He said that the government will provide financing for this reason and that the e-court mission project’s third stage had been approved with a significant financial increase over the previous phase.

Judgment Delivered by the Court:

Regarding the financing permission, the Union Government’s decision to set aside Rs. 800 crores for the Supreme Court complex enlargement is a wise one. Encouraging the digitalization process and adopting technology improvements by the court is in line with the government’s goal of improving accessibility to justice.

A cooperative approach to upgrading the justice delivery system is shown by the Prime Minister’s focus on capacity building, increased funding for the e-court mission initiative, and recognition of the judiciary’s work. The advancements are meant to tackle current issues, provide justice to all citizens, and clear the path for India’s court to become more technologically sophisticated and efficient.
