Five Muslim males who were beaten up by police during a flogging incident in October of last year have requested compensation, according to four Gujarati police officers who have petitioned the Gujarat High Court in Gujarat, India. The State Police has received service from the officers AV Parmar, DB Kumavar, Raju Rameshbhai Dabhi, and Kanaksingh Laxman Singh for more than ten to fifteen years. They have asked the court to refrain from penalising them since doing so would negatively affect their service records.

Videos of the whipping incident appeared on social media during a Navratri celebration in the village of Undhela. The victims’ families petitioned the High Court to hold the police officers in contempt of court for disobeying the Supreme Court’s orders in the case of DK Basu v. State of West Bengal. In October of last year, the High Court requested a response from the state. Rajesh Kumar Gadhiya, superintendent of police, claimed that the Muslim men and 159 members of their group planned to sabotage a Garba celebration in order to spread panic among the Hindu population.

The High Court gave the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Nadia District instructions to look through the widely shared photos and videos to see how each of the 14 police officers contributed to the tragedy. CJM Chitra Ratnoo’s report states that the video and picture evidence from the event were unclear, making it difficult to identify all 14 of the involved police officers. It was possible to name only four police officers.
