Mechanical entries in history sheets on the basis of caste should not be made: SC

On Tuesday, The SC took the Suo Motu cognizance regarding the mechanical entries that are made in the history sheets that are prepared by the police against the innocent individuals who come from the marginalized and disadvantaged section of society.

The bench of Justice Surya Kant and KV Visvanathan made an expansion in the scope of the proceedings in the case of Aam Aadmi Party, MLA, Amanatullah Khan, whereby the decision of the Delhi Police he was listed as of a bad character and opened a history sheet against him.

The court observed and cited certain studies whereby it has been proven that the prejudicial mindset of the police reflected in the selective mentioning of individuals belonging to a certain caste.

It gave a direction to all the state governments to take preventive measures in this regard.

The court also said that the audit prepared by the police being overseen by a senior police officer can be instrumental in such situations.

The other states were urged to make amends in their policies on the basis of the ‘Delhi Model’
