News – Menstrual leaves have been provided to students at the Dharmashastra National Law University in Jabalpur (DNLU).

Facts of the news – The announcement came in a circular released on Friday, which approved a long-pending request by the Student Bar Association (SBA) for menstruation breaks for students.

Students can now take leave for 36 lectures every semester (6 courses for each of the six subjects). With the new policy, full-time female students at DNLU can also use these breaks due to menstrual cycle issues.

“It is hereby announced that full-time female students at the university can take advantage of the general make-up for class absences caused by the menstrual cycle.” “The general make-up rules on the extent of the number of days, i.e., 6 classes per subject per semester, will remain the same as notified and practiced in the university at present (sic),” the circular states.

The circular further states that the Dean of Student Welfare would have approval power over the aforementioned leaves.

A class representative and SBA member said that the biggest problem was convincing the authorities that these leaves were required and did not discriminate against male students. Initially, there was considerable opposition from the authorities since not everyone is open-minded about menstruation, and others were concerned that it would be discriminatory among male equivalents. SBA had several talks with administration to explain why menstruation leaves are required.
