Conventional Tamil Nadu Govt. to Finalize Transgender Upliftment Policy, Setting a Precedent for LGBTQ+ Rights Nationwide

The Madras High Court has granted Tamil Nadu three months to finalise a policy for the upliftment of transgender persons, providing them reservation in public employment and education.
Justice Anand Venkatesh expressed confidence that the policy will set a precedent for the entire country and give hope to the LGBTQ+ community. The State Public Prosecutor informed the court that a draft policy had been submitted, which will be translated into English and Tamil. The state will also conduct camps and meetings with stakeholders as per the court’s direction.
The court allowed the state’s request and directed the state to decide the amount of reservation for transgender persons in education and public employment.
The court has been passing directions in a plea filed by a homosexual couple seeking police protection from their family, aiming to remove the stigma associated with the LGBTQ+ community and ensure the welfare of its members.
