India has always been committed to international arbitration and issuing arbitral awards.
Justice Surya Kant highlighted that the alternative dispute resolution mechanism has been becoming a preferred mode for the settlement of disputes.
He was speaking at the valedictory function of the conference on international arbitration and the rule of law.
He said that in terms of arbitration, India has also received tremendous infrastructural support.
He also said that India’s commitment can be seen as it was among the six Asian nations to sign the Geneva Convention and among the 10 original signatories to the New York Convention.
He said that arbitration is not a novelty for the Indian subcontinent as there have been historical mentions of it in Indian history.
The opening of the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s Office is another important milestone.
This would give rise to an increase in the international parties choosing India as the seat of arbitration due to the credibility and the expertise.
It is not only limited to attracting international parties but also to making arbitration more accessible in India.
