Supreme Court Asks NMC To Reassess MBBS Admission Rules For “PwD Candidates”

The National Medical Commission is required by the Supreme Court to review its policies on PwD reservations in MBBS admissions in light of the recently released disability assessment criteria as of March 12, 2024. An applicant who was denied quota benefits because they had a mental health issue prompted this review.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has been ordered by the Supreme Court to reconsider its recommendations regarding reserving space for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) in MBBS admissions, marking a significant legal move. The order was issued in reaction to a petition filed by an MBBS candidate who had been refused PwD quota benefits because of a mental health issue.
The bench of SC Justice PS Narasimha and Pankaj Mithal instructed the NMC to review the Expert Committee recommendations in light of the Ministry of Social Justice and amended standards for empowerment were issued on March 12, 2024. A thorough set of criteria for evaluating mental impairments is included in the revised standards.
