To Tally EVM votes with VVPAT Slips: Plea heard by SC
Last Updated on April 18, 2024 by News Desk
The Supreme Court has been hearing the petition whereby it was sought that every vote that was cast through the EVM be tallied with the Voter- Verifiable paper Audit Trail, slips during elections.
As per the current situation, VVPAT verification is done only for the votes that are recorded in five randomly selected EVMs in each assembly segment.
Arun Agarwal, who is a lawyer and an activist, prayed that every vote should be tallied against the VVPAT slips.
A direction was sought to be given that the voters should be allowed to drop the slips in the ballot box. These slips were generated by the VVPAT. This was sought to ensure that the voter’s ballot has been counted as recorded.
The Election Commission of India’s response was sought by the court on 1st April when the tagging of the plea was done with other similar matters.
During the previous hearing, it was observed by the bench of Justices Sanniv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta that unless there is a fear of strict punishment, there will always be the slightest fo chance of manipulation taking place.
