Supreme Court Urges Tamil Nadu government to Train Police Officer on submission of Electronic Evidence

The Supreme Court has urged the Tamil Nadu government to provide proper training to its police officers regarding the submission of authenticated electronic evidence to courts.
The court made the remarks after discovering that the investigating officer (IO) in charge of probing a 2010 kidnapping case in Tamil Nadu appeared to be unaware of the procedure under , which deals with the submission of authenticated electronic evidence in criminal cases.
The court was dealing with two appeals filed by appellants, William Stephen and one another, challenging a 2016 Madras High Court judgement that sentenced two men to life imprisonment for kidnapping a child for ransom.
The court emphasised that the IO cannot be blamed for this, as proper training was not imparted to him. The court called on the state government to ensure that police officers are adequately trained on this aspect.
