CJI DY Chandrachud, while speaking on the inauguration of the year-long diamond jubilee celebration of the Supreme Court, stressed the fact that there is a pressing need to begin the ‘difficult conversation’ on long court vacations, where the lawyers and the judges can explore the opportunities of flexi-time.

He addressed that there should be a need to shift from the ‘adjournment culture’ to the ‘culture of professionalism’ in the courts, as it would be essential for the timely delivery of justice as well as the administration of justice.

Secondly, he also highlighted the need for ensuring that the length of the oral arguments does not become the reason for the delay of the judicial outcomes, as it can lead to the capturing of the judicial institutions by the mighty

He also called for inclusivity, where he stressed providing a level playing field to first-generation lawyers from all backgrounds.

During his discussion, he talked about the underrepresentation of the members from the scheduled castes as well as scheduled tribes, in both the bar as well as the bench.

He also highlighted the aspect of gender diversity as recently, the share of women in the district judiciaries has increased and the 11 women were also designated as senior advocates in the SC in the month of January.

At this event, three information and technology initiatives were launched, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged the Digital Supreme Court Report, Digital Courts 2.0, and the new bilingual website of the Supreme Court.
