A PIL petition was filed before the Punjab and Haryana High Court whereby it was sought to restrain the conduct of the cricket matches at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium at Mullanpur , Mohali

Nikhil Thamman a final year sudent at UILS, Panjab University filed the plea and stated that for the construction of the stadium necessary environmental clearances were not sought and this was in blatant violation of the Environmental Impact Assesment Notification (2006)

He highlighted in the plea that the there was a bird sanctuary in sector 21 Chandigarh which lied within the 10 km radius of the stadium.

He said that this would imply that an environmental clearance from the national board of the wildlife has to be taken but the same was not done.

The mandatory clearance from the department of wildlife and forest , Chandigarh was also not taken.

He recounted that several cricket matches have taken place including an Indian Premier League match, that took place last month.

He said that the more IPL matches are scheduled to take place in the stadium.

He called for the attention of court to stall the hosting of further IPL or other matches and even sought for appropriate legal action.
