Manual scavenging, Shame on Humanity: Karnataka HC

Issue:- On Wednesday, a Suo moto cognizance was taken up by the Karnataka High Court of a Big Picture Article that was published by the New Indian Express on 25th December 2023.

Observation:- The court observed that the story was disturbing and shocks one’s conscience.

Advocate Sridhar Prabhu was appointed by the court as the amicus curiae to assist the court as well as file a PIL with the registry for placing the matter before 8th January.

The news article published the news where the students were forced to clean the septic tank in the Malur of Kolar.

The court quoted, “Is it not a shame on humanity? Is this what we all are here for”

The court said that the freedom fighters and social reformers have dreamed that everybody would be equal but whatever is happening even after 60 years is shameful.

Chief Justice Prasanna B. Varale and Justice Krishna S. Dixit quoted a couplet by Sahir Ludhianvi, saying “Even soil has some value but human beings are worth nothing”
