The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to file a status report on a probe into allegations of misappropriation of funds for housing under the Central government’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY-G) and the State’s Chief Minister’s Solar Powered Green Housing Scheme.
The court heard a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by ML Dhamodharan, who claimed that the State Revenue Department officials had misappropriated around ₹54,40,000 worth of government subsidy funds for welfare schemes.
Dhamodharan claimed that the funds had been pocketed by officials who had allocated houses to “non-existent persons and to persons above the poverty line.” The court questioned the state government’s actions and asked why they were sitting on Dhamodharan’s complaint.
The state government confirmed that the DVAC was already probing related complaints and that 25 witnesses had been examined. The court directed the Additional Public Prosecutor to file a status report by April 23.
