Supreme Court launches ‘Neutral Citations’ of Judgments

Supreme Court, in an open court launches Neutral Citations, free of cost, for its judgement.
Facts:
Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud announced in open court on Thursday that the Supreme Court of India has adopted neutral citation for all of its decisions.
The impartial citation will be completed in three steps for all judgements handed down by the Court.
Judgments from 2014 and earlier make up the first tranche, which has already been finished.
The second tranche will cover the years 1995 through 2013, and the third, the years 1950 through 1994.
Moreover, the CJI stated that the Court uses machine learning algorithms to translate its decisions from English to regional languages.
We also have a group of district judges, legal scholars, and high court justices who review the accuracy of the computer translations, he continued.
Further information on the Neutral Citation System, which aims to make it simpler for courts to post Supreme Court judgements in the public domain by offering a standard manner of referencing judicial decisions, was released in a press release later in the day.
The Supreme Court would have adopted the Neutral Citation, which would be distinct to each judgement and unrelated to Law Reports or other publications.
Every reportable and non-reportable order and decision of the Supreme Court of India will have a citation of its own, making it simple to identify, reference, and retrieve cases.
A neutral citation will be given to orders and decisions beginning on January 1, 2023, when they are published on the Supreme Court’s official website, in addition to explaining how prior cases may be mentioned.
The press release also said that everyone will be able to access these citations for free.
