Regular checks on Mid-Day Meal Providers Must be Ensured: Bombay HC

It was recently observed by the Bombay HC that the mid-day meals that the private contractors, as well as the self-help groups who prepare the mid-day meals for children of the marginalized section, must be paid regular and surprise checks so that the children don’t suffer.
The May 14th, 2024, order of the Mira Bhayender Municipal Corporation terminating the contract of the petitioner, a self-help group, was challenged.
The division bench of Justice Mahesh Sonal and Justice Kamal Khata upheld the termination of the self-help groups that provided poor-quality food to 12 students.
They were provided several opportunities by the Mira Bhayender Municipal Corporation to provide better quality food but it was not done.
The court also said that the Mira Bhayender Municipal Corporation rightly followed the principles of natural justice and fair play before the termination of the contract of the self-help group.
Therefore, the court said that the civic authorities must have the duty to keep a vigil, to ensure that the children get good quality food.
