Recently, Public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in Bombay high Court seeking to direct university of Mumbai to conduct Suicide prevention training workshops.
As per Live Law report, PIL is filed by the child rights activist Shobha Panchmukh, raising concern over rising cases of suicides among students referring to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report which shows increase in suicides i.e. 1487 in 2019, 1648 in 2020 and 1834 in 2021.
The PIL additionally seeks to direct the university to “display the contact details and roles of college counsellors on the college website, notice boards, counselling rooms, admission prospectus and annual souvenirs”.
The petitioner also pointed out that the University of Mumbai has failed to implement national education policy (NEP) 2020 issued by the ministry of human resource development which makes it mandatory to establish counselling systems for students in educational institutions.
A division bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Amit Borkar, hearing the PIL, ordered the state to file the response for the same.
