The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University to consider the application of a transgender candidate for its undergraduate degree course.

Justice M Dhandapani ordered the university to consider the application of petitioner A Nivetha and place her in the appropriate category for admissions within two weeks of its order.

Nivetha filed a petition claiming that the prospectus issued for the undergraduate degree course for 2024-2025 for the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry Course was illegal as it did not categorize transgender candidates under a special category.

The court directed the third respondent to consider the application of Nivetha dated 26.06.2024 and place her appropriately within two weeks from the date of receipt of a copy of the order.

The court emphasized that the third respondent shall not reject the application of the petitioner on the ground of transgender.
