As part of a massive initiative to enhance judicial welfare, the Gujarat High Court has implemented an integrated medical care program that includes free treatment for its judges, judicial officers, and staff members within seven prestigious government hospitals. A wide-ranging enlargement of health benefits for the judiciary workforce has been overseen by Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and the Medical Facility Committee.

The program fills an important gap in the current High Court Medical Facility, established in November 2023, which was without specialist medical services. In this new scheme, beneficiaries will be provided specialty and super-specialty medical services through tie-ups with four government hospitals: GMERS Medical College and Hospital, M&J Western Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Government Dental College & Hospital, and Government Spine Institute & Physiotherapy College.

Besides, the High Court has firmed up two-year MoUs with three grant-in-aid super-specialty hospitals: U. N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology, Gujarat Cancer & Research Center, and Institute of Kidney Diseases & Research Centre. These agreements provide for cashless treatment of serious medical conditions, and the reimbursement process is fine-tuned to avoid delays.

The healthcare program speaks to the commitment of the judiciary to the well-being of its personnel and their dependent family members, ensuring that persons serving in the Justice System can do so without health-related distractions.

A whole spectrum of medical coverage, from basic healthcare to advanced cardiac care to cancer treatment, speaks volumes to a very progressive employee welfare approach. This is indeed a model on which other High Courts across the country may model themselves for the benefit of judicial staff throughout.
