By making divisive remarks against the “Shiva Linga” inside the Gyanvapi mosque, the appeal said that both politicians were attempting to destroy religious feelings and ruin the ambiance of Varanasi.
On Tuesday, a sessions court in Varanasi dismissed a plea that sought the filing of a first information report (FIR) against AIMIM head Asaduddin Owaisi and Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav for their comments regarding the ongoing Kashi Vishwanath-Gyanvapi Mosque dispute.
Advocate Harishankar Pandey’s revision plea, which sought to file a formal complaint against the two leaders, was denied by Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar.
A magistrate court rejected Pandey’s request in February 2023, finding that the allegations provided in the plea did not establish a crime against the leaders.
Pandey moved sessions court as a result. Pandey asserted that by making contentious remarks about an allegedly Shiva Linga discovered inside the Gyanvapi Mosque, both leaders were attempting to destroy the religious atmosphere of Varanasi.
He maintained that these politicians were attempting to stir up public emotions in order to garner votes, even though the Supreme Court had not yet commented on the issue.
The leaders’ “objectionable remarks” about the Shiva Linga, he continued in his petition, “hurt the sentiments” of Hindus.
