Bombay High Court orders petitioner to deposit Rs. 3 Lakhs to demonstrate good faith: Statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Issue- A public interest litigation lawsuit filed, claiming to have raised Rs. 50 lakh through crowdsourcing for the statue’s construction, was being heard by the court.
Facts of the case- The Bombay High Court’s Aurangabad branch recently demanded that an individual who wanted to have a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj built establish his legitimacy by paying 3 lakh with the court registry.
Arguments- According to the petitioner, he is in charge of the Rayatecha Raje Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue Committee in Nanded and has gathered 50 lakh rupees.
Reasoning- The petition lacks a purpose of public interest, according to the Registrar’s assessment.
Judgment- The petitioner requested that the bench lower the required deposit amount. He said that he would just deposit Rs. 50,000 less than the requested Rs. 3 lakh. But, he ultimately consented to deposit the Rs. 35,000 as advised by the bench. The bench gave him until February 28 to deposit the Rs. 3 lakh. On March 3, the subject would be heard again.
