Justice Pankaj Naqvi of Allahabad High Court in his farewell speech has remarked that “There is no religion superior to ‘humanism’. You can’t be a good Hindu, you can’t be a good Muslim, unless you are a good human being,”.
Justice Naqvi was speaking at a farewell function organized by the High Court on his final working day. He said that we should always follow secularism and respect all religions and faith.
He also highlighted the importance of the Indian Constitution for judges by according it a status similar to that of a bible and further added that “we should live and die for our constitution.”
Justice Naqvi completed his law from 1984 and started his work in the legal field in 1985 as an advocate. In the year 2011 he was appointed as a judge at the Allahabad High Court.
In his illustrious tenure spanning nine years in the High Court he was part of benches which have given various path breaking judgements.
He was a part of the bench in Salamat Ansari & 3 Others v State of Uttar Pradesh in which the Court held that right to live with a person of choice, irrespective of religion, is intrinsic to right to life and personal liberty.
In Dhananjay v. State Of Uttar Pradesh, a Bench Led by Justice Naqvi refused to quash a First Information Report against a man accused of posting nude snaps of his wife on WhatsApp.
In Nadeem v. State of Uttar Pradesh, Justice Naqvi stayed the arrest of a man booked by the UP Police under the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020.
