On February 3, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea challenging the Karnataka High Court’s decision to quash an extortion case against former BJP Karnataka State President Naleen Kumar Kateel.
The Court found the complaint vague and based on assumptions.
A bench led by CJI Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar clarified that the dismissal does not prevent future complaints if substantial evidence emerges.
Earlier, the Karnataka High Court ruled that the complainant, Adarsh R. Iyer, had no direct involvement in the alleged transaction, making the extortion claim legally unsound.
It also noted that the complaint lacked essential elements of the offence.
During the hearing, CJI Khanna observed that an FIR cannot be filed based on mere assumptions and questioned the absence of evidence supporting the extortion allegations.
