The Supreme Court has mandated reservation for women lawyers in the Delhi Tax Bar Association and Sales Tax Bar Association. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant, Dipankar Datta, and Ujjal Bhuyan directed that the Treasurer post and 30% of Executive Committee seats be reserved for women.
The Court clarified that its earlier order for Delhi District Bar Associations would also apply to these associations. Women candidates will compete for these reserved positions under the same eligibility conditions outlined in the prior directive. The judgment came while hearing applications in the Fozia Rehman case. The case involves ensuring gender representation in bar associations’ leadership roles. One application pertained to the Delhi Tax and Sales Tax Bar Associations, while the other addressed the Advocates’ Association in Bangalore.
The Court reserved posts for women lawyers in the Delhi-based bar associations but issued only a notice regarding the Bangalore Advocates’ Association. Previously, on January 20, the Court extended similar reservations to the National Green Tribunal Bar Association in Delhi. This ruling highlights the judiciary’s commitment to promoting gender inclusion and representation in legal institutions.
