Calcutta High Court Directs CBI to Probe Objectionable Comments in RG Kar Rape-Murder Case

The Calcutta High Court has instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate offensive comments on social media related to the RG Kar rape-murder case. A trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar hospital, and since then, objectionable remarks have surfaced under the victim’s image online.

The court’s division bench, led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya, addressed the issue. The judges noted the seriousness of the comments and asked the CBI to examine whether action could be taken. The CBI took over the case investigation earlier, and the court set a hearing date for 18th September to review the matter.

A petition was brought before the court by a counsel, who raised concerns over untraceable social media handles posting offensive remarks. The petitioner requested that the Kolkata Police Cyber Cell investigate and trace these sources. However, the court ruled that the CBI would handle the issue as it was already leading the investigation.

The Additional Solicitor General informed the court that the CBI did not have a separate cyber cell to handle this aspect. In response, the court directed the CBI to cooperate with the state police’s cyber cell when necessary. Still, the final report would need to come from the CBI.

With these directives, the court adjourned the matter, allowing the CBI to file its report after collaborating with the state police to address the petitioner’s concerns.The RG Kar rape-murder case continues to receive attention as the investigation delves deeper into both the crime and related online misconduct.
