NEET-UG 2024: The Supreme Court has received a case contesting the granting of “Grace Marks” to 1563 applicants; an expedited hearing is requested

What is the NEET-UG 2024 controversy?
– Millions of students took part in the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) NEET (UG) 2024 test, which was held on May 5 across 4,750 centers.
– It’s possible that early completion of the answer sheet evaluations led to the results, which were originally scheduled for distribution on June 14, being disclosed on June 4.
– The NTA’s decision to provide grace scores to 1,563 candidates sparked a storm and accusations of irregularities.
– This was seen as a reactive rather than a deliberate approach, and it wasn’t until questions about the distribution of impossible scores surfaced that it was made clear.
– There have been requests for the creation of an impartial, powerful commission to look into the conduct of the exam.
Why were grace marks awarded and what are the concerns?
– The NTA purportedly gave grace marks to make up for differences in the NCERT textbooks, which caused irregularities in the candidates’ test results.
– The rationale behind the policy’s adoption was questioned because it was opaque and differed from previous procedures.
– Requests were made for a thorough disclosure of the names of those who received grace marks, together with their initial scores, the marks they were awarded, and their updated scores.
What actions have been taken by stakeholders?
– According to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, NEET-UG results showed no signs of a paper leak.
– A four-person group was established by the Education Ministry to examine the distribution of grace marks.
63 examples of misbehavior were recorded, and 23 students were debarred, according to a document issued by NTA authorities answering frequently asked questions regarding paper leaks.
Positive Critical Question:
In order to avoid disputes such as this in the future, how can fairness and openness be better guaranteed?
Negative Critical Question:
What steps would be taken in response to these claims of anomalies and reactive decision-making to rebuild confidence in the NEET-UG test system?
