Karnataka High Court Grants Bail to 11 Accused in Belagavi Assault Case, Orders Trial Completion Within a Year

The Karnataka High Court has granted bail to 11 of 13 people arrested in December for the Belagavi incident involving a woman who was assaulted and disrobed after her son eloped with a woman from their village.
The order was passed on April 15 by a single-judge bench of Justice S Viswajith Shetty, based on a petition filed by some of the accused.
The accused argued that there had been no ill will between them and the victim and that the conflict had happened only after the elopement. They also argued that the investigation was complete and the chargesheet filed, adding that the victim had not suffered grievous injury.
The opposing counsel argued that the accused committed a heinous crime by tying, disrobing, and assaulting the woman, and that no leniency should be shown.
The court granted bail to the accused, subject to them executing a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh with two sureties. They were also directed to regularly appear on all hearing dates, not to threaten prosecution witnesses, or get involved in similar offences.
On April 15, a division bench of Chief Justice V Anjaria and Justice Krishna S Dixit directed that the trial of the Belagavi assault case be finished within a year.
The court confirmed that the victim had been allotted two acres of land, given a compensation of Rs 5 lakh, and that she and her family members have been living with mental peace and security.
