Gyanvapi Dispute | Allahabad High Court Notifies Mosque Committee of Request for ASI Survey of “Wuzukhana” Area
Last Updated on January 31, 2024 by News Desk
Within a Civil Revision plea challenging the Varanasi District Judge’s order refusing to order the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a survey of the Wazukhana area (apart from the ‘Shiva Linga’) inside the Gyanvapi Mosque premises, the Allahabad High Court today sent a notice to the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee, which oversees the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi.
Advocate Tiwari, together with Advocates Amitabh Trivedi and Vikas Kumar, appeared before a bench of Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal and contended that the ASI study of the Wuzukhana area is important in order to ascertain the religious nature of the entire land.
It was further contended that, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directives, non-invasive surveying techniques might be used to cover the Wuzukhana region (apart from the “Shiva Linga”). After hearing the arguments, the committee for the mosque received a notification from the court. The future date on the subject is yet unknown.
The research also claims that current structures (Gyanvapi Mosque) were built using remnants of the pre-existing temple, including its pillars.
The Varanasi District Judge’s July 21, 2023, judgment directed the ASI to carry out this assessment in order to ascertain if the mosque was built atop an earlier Hindu temple construction.
