Gujarat Encounters : Petitioners plead to SC to prosecute the identified police officers

In the issue of the pleas that were filed, the petitioners informed the SC that the report of the monitoring committee led by Justice HS Bedi has found that there was foul play in 3 cases out of 17 and the police officers that have been identified must be prosecuted.

The submissions were heard by the bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sandeep Mehta and the matter was adjourned by 2 weeks.

The petition was filed by Journalist BG Verghese, poet lyricist Javed Akhtar and Social Worker Shabnam Hashmi that the encounters that were done by the Gujarat Police were fake in furtherance of which the committee was appointed by SC.

The report was submitted by Justice Bedi to the court in 2018 in a sealed covered. The court had directed to make the report public by overruling the objections of the government.
