Delhi HC directs WhatsApp and Telegram to deactivate groups, channels selling pirated copies of Shahrukh Khan movie ‘Jawan’

Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed WhatsApp and Telegram to deactivate all the groups and channels selling pirated copies of the latest movie ‘Jawan’ starring Shahrukh Khan.
The Court also directed WhatsApp, Telegram and mobile network operators like Airtel, Idea-Vodafone, Reliance Jio and BSNL to disclose subscriber information for the phone numbers operating these accounts, including user names and addresses to enable legal action against them.
The said order was passed when the producer of the movie, Red Chillies Entertainment, filed a petition after identifying a person named Rohit Sharma who was selling copyrighted content related to the movie illegally, therefore infringing the petitioner’s right.
Mr. Rajshekhar Rao, learned senior counsel for the petitioner also stated that the list of the links of the WhatsApp chat groups, telegram channels/groups and non-compliant websites selling copyrighted content which infringes the petitioner’s right has been provided in the petition.
Justice C Hari Shankar passed the interim directions restraining Mr. Rohit Sharma from illegally distributing, displaying, releasing, exhibiting, or playing in any manner, the information relating to the movie. The court also directed Meta Platform to suspend his Whatsapp and Facebook accounts which infringed petitioner’s rights.
The plea also mentioned that a police complaint was registered against Rohit Sharma and others in Mumbai on September 13’ 2023 for illegally circulating copies of the film.
